ENG 203 Course Syllabus

Course Description: An interdisciplinary course which uses fiction, drama, poetry, film, essays, and non-fictional works to explore medical issues dealing with illness and health. It offers a forum to explore human needs, across times and cultures, related to illness, death, and the human condition in general. Students are expected to gain greater understanding of the patient experience and gain greater self-knowledge of the role they play in it. (3 cr. hrs.)

Pre/Co-requisite: ENG 101 English Composition I

Course Student Learning Outcomes: Through classroom activities, written examinations and laboratory assignments the student will

  1. Analyze the relationship between literature and medicine
  2. Analyze others’ perspectives/values and how they influence decisions and how one’s own perspectives/values influence our decisions
  3. Analyze relevance of literature to contemporary life

 IDEA Objectives

  • Gain a broader understanding and appreciation of intellectual/cultural activity as it relates to literature
  • Acquiring skills in working with others as a member of a team
  • Developing knowledge and understanding of diverse perspectives, global awareness, or other cultures

Grades in the course are based on the following deliverables:

20%     Individual Paper

20%     Midterm Exam

20%     Discussions

20%     Quizzes, Short written assignments, etc.

20%     Team Presentation and Related Assignments

Course Grade – Standards the student must achieve to satisfactorily complete the course:  Score of 70% or higher on final grade

  • Grade Scale by % 
      • 90-100=A
      • 80-89=B 
      • 70-79=C
      • 60-69=D
      • 59 and below=F

Note: Assignments will be added and opened on a regular basis, so it is important that you check the assignment summary below regularly so that you do not miss any assignments. Generally assignments are posted a week or two in advance.
